it's above freezing in montgomery. arlington, fairfax, prince george's countys, all the locations in the low 30s. elsewhere, it is near freezing in leesburg toward frederick and winchester. we're going to have this rain off and on through the rest of the day. where they aren't getting the snow, that should be ending changing over to rain in the next two, three hours. perhaps around 8:00 or 9:00. up to an inch of snow is possible in some of the areas in the lavender zone and hour by hour through the day, just rain with the snow north and west through 8:00 a.m. elsewhere, all rain and temperatures above freezing most areas and we'll be in the upper 30s by noontime. more rain likely later this afternoon. we'll look at that and turning windy and colder tonight. next update in ten minutes. now a look at traffic with danella. good morning. >> good morning. checking roads in the area. your travel lanes are open, pretty quiet. happy friday to you. didn't say that earlier. let head over to the gw parkway in both directions. you are clear. shooting to the dulles toll

road, a live look past 28. nice and clear. clear as far as the volume or accidents. but you are dealing with wet pavement this morning. so give yourself a little extra time and space in between the other cars. getting closer to the beltway passing hunter mill road, no issues at all. aaron and eun, back to you. >> thanks, danella. if you're looking to beat this huge winter storm out of town, you might want to hop on a train pretty soon now. amtrak is planning normal northeast service between d.c. and new york this morning. they tell us however, once you reach the big apple, you probably can't go any farther. all service will be suspended just after noon today. train service is also being canceled in connecticut, vermont and in upstate new york. so be prepared for a slick commute this morning. overnight rain started to fall in our area. news 4's tony tull is monitoring conditions right now. he's in leesburg and it looks like snow there, tony. >> reporter: i got to tell you we took the dulles toll road to

route 7 into leesburg and we were dealing with rain all morning long until we got to historic leesburg. as you mentioned, aaron, you can see the snowflakes falling. here is the thing. you've heard tom say all morning long. the road temperatures are too high for this to stick. if you look right here, even in the untreated areas, the snow is not stinging. even if you look here, road conditions are not that bad. they are wet. but they are not snowy and at least here along certain parts of leesburg pike they're not icy. if you are headed out this morning, know you have to dust your car offment you'll have a little bit of accumulation. probably a little less than an inch. as soon as you get to the roads and sidewalks, you should be okay. a lot of areas coming in were affected by rain. we had puddles then we got here to leesburg and then snow and flurries. make sure to put a buffer on your time and it's friday, have an easy commute to work or to school and enjoy the weather.

that's the latest from leesburg, guys back to you. >> tony, thank you. we can tell you that airports will be a mess this morning. here's a live look at reagan national airport. cancellations mounting as well as at bwi marshall and at dulles. as well as airports across the northeast have started to shut down ahead of the storm. megan mcgrath is live at what travelers can expect. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. right now we're starting to see a lot of movement in terms of flights and proactive changes in plans here. we're at the u.s. airways ticket counter. you can see all the people checking in this morning. just a few minutes ago one of the employees made an announcement saying if you are among those with a flight headed to the northeast and impacted by the weather, she instructed those folks to get over into a different line and told them they would be put on earlier flights. the strategy here this morning by the airlines is to get everybody out as early as possible. this weather is going to hit later on in the afternoon.

that's when we're expecting to see the major flight cancellations and into tomorrow. they want to move as many people around, get them to the destinations before the weather hits as possible. now, unfortunately, that has not been possible for everyone here had morning. we encountered a gentleman on a different airline. he already had a flight cancel to new york. he's trying to get to the ukraine. >> the flights overbooked everywhere out o of kennedy. like i heard two thirds of the flights domestic were canceled. >> you need to catch this flight? >> oh, yeah or wait another day in new york. or put me up in a hotel. i'm sure they won't be happy with that. >> this video was shot at logan airport. you can see all of the snow equipment that they have standing by ready for when this weather starts to really impact the airports. we are expecting quite -- nearly 3,000 flights canceled nationwide. we're just getting rain in our area.

that doesn't matter. when you see the cancellations, there is the trickle-down effect. the airlines are trying to pull the planes out of affected areas and that impacts the entire schedule. it's going to get worse as the day wears on. reporting live, megan mcgrath, news 4. eun, back to you. massachusetts and connectic connecticut's governors are urging workers to stay home ahead of the looming blizzard. they want to avoid scenes like this tonight. this was the chicago area yesterday. snow fell during the day and early evening there. it made the ride home from work a nightmare for thousands. >> how long have you been on the road? >> almost three hours. >> i work at lake cook and 21. it took me two hours to get here. >> how long does it usually take? >> usually in 45 minutes. i had a 2 1/2 hour commute home today. it was thoroughly enjoyable. didn't get above ten miles per hour the whole way. >> some saw half a foot of snow yesterday. >> even snow fell north of there in wisconsin. police responded to more than 30

as well. there is not much traffic at this point. but this morning's commute could be a little slower than usual because of the weather. today, the nation's gun show returns to chantilly. this is the second time in less than three months that the show is going on at the dulles expo center. the last gun show was two weeks after the deadly school shooting in newtown, connecticut. protesters gathered while hundreds lined up to get inside. the show starts at 3:00 this afternoon. 9:00 a.m. on saturday and 10:00 a.m. on sunday. tickets are $13 or you can get a three-day pass for $20. we've learned first lady michelle obama will attend the funeral for a chicago girl killed just a week after performing during the inauguration weekend here in washington. the 15-year-old was gunned down on chicago's south side less than a mile away from the obama's home. she had performed with her high school band during inauguration festivities. education secretary arne duncan and pat quinn will also attend

the service. her death brought renewed focus on gun and gang violence in the city. the viewing of a -- former maryland delegate christine died after rescuers pulled her from her burning home temple hills. jones was the first african-american to represent prince george's county in the maryland general assembly. the final viewing will be held at bethlehem baptist church in southeast d.c. on martin luther king avenue. the viewing begins at 9:00 this morning. the funeral service at 11:00. a -- this man died responding to a car fire near glebe road. today marks the one-year anniversary of his death. the virginia native was only 33 years old. today's remembrance will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the alexandria fire department development center on jefferson street. we'll remain in the dark when it comes to new developments in the chandra leafy murder case.

the hearings that involved ingmar guandique continue to be closed to the public and media. there have been a number of hearings which could be a sign with his conviction. the hearings should remain closed because of safety issues. the judge says the details of the proceedings will eventually be made public. the department of veterans affairs apologizing to the families of vets whose remains were unmarked or mismarked. the department found nearly 800 problems in its review of every single grave in the national cemetery system. it took the va more than a year to look at millions of gravesites. this was sparked by problems at arlington national cemetery. the problems included unmarked and mismarked graves as well as urns that were unearth and dumped into a pile of dirt. police in montgomery county say they finally have a break in a series of home burglaries. three men have been charged with robbing more than 30 homes in north potomac since last spring. police caught them after breaking into a home last month.

they're accused of stealing more than $100,000 worth of property. the airport's authority is reacting to a report this morning saying the agency could be missing out on millions of dollars of revenue from the dulles toll road. the washington examiner first reported that there were more than a million toll violations on the road last year. but less than 100,000 tickets were issued. less than one in ten violators was getting hit with a fee. the airport's authority says the report doesn't account for false violations like equipment problems. they say only 1% of drivers use the toll road without pay and in those cases the agency works hard to collect fees. >> tonight, getting around on metro could be tough. weekend track work starts tonight on two lines. trains will single track between shady grove and -- and takoma. on the orange line, trains will be sharing tracks between boston and west falls church and stadium armory and cheverly.

all work should be done by monday. a look at what you will see when had you get to ride the silver line. news 4's cameras got a tour of the spring hill station. the four-story platform offers a sweeping view of tyson's which will be home to four new stations. that line set to open one year from now. we've been seeing rain. i saw a little ice on my windshield when i turned them on to get rid of the water in front of me. >> interesting. maybe your neighborhood is cold. >> it's warmed up now and even where there is snow falling, it's melting on roadways. that's the key factor, pavement temperatures are above freezing. storm team 4 radar showing mostly rain. where you see the white, that is snow and it's a big fat wet flakes falling across loudoun county, northwestern montgomery county into southern frederick county maryland. there's a little bit of flurry activity in warren and clark and east of there. northern fauquier county down to culpeper. getting some of that wet snow.

it's all rain and temperatures, again, pavement temperatures above freezing. air temperatures a little above freezing in the metro and suburbs. farther north and west, it's near the freezing mark. again, pavement temperatures above freezing. the areas in lavender may be getting an inch of snow. probably not that much. maybe the higher elevations there. this is a minor event for us. it's not going to be for new england. later today. as we get into the afternoon, rain off and on. highs reaching 40s. strong gusty winds blow in tonight. we could have gusts of wind 35, 40 miles an hour this friday night into early saturday morning. maybe even flurries flying through the air. down to the 20s saturday morning. afternoon highs on saturday near 40. the winds will diminish tomorrow afternoon. we'll have a lot of sun. on sunday, partly cloudy, 20s in the mornings. highs mid-40s. near 50 on monday. rain likely in the morning ending by midday monday is the way it looks.

the news kags. a 12-year-old boy is facing felony charges for making prank calls. he called 9-1-1 in october and said armed robbers were inside ashton kutcher's home. it's called swatting and it's often directed at the homes of celebrities. the boy reported and emergency at an l.a. bank which turned out to be a hoax. he faces two counts much making bomb threats and computer hacking. another lawsuit against lance armstrong. a dallas promotions is suing him. they're demanding armstrong pay back $12 million in bonuses it paid him for winning the tour de france. the lawsuit accused armstrong of lying to cheat the company out of mms of dollars. armstrong is also trying to work out a deal with the u.s. anti-doping agency where he talks to investigators in exchange for reducing his lifetime ban from the sport. olympic gold medalist gabby

and april storm moves up the coast. we're tracking the impact of the system on your drive to work. plus your weekend plans. especially if you plan to travel. good morning everybody. i'm aaron gilchrist. i'm eun yang. welcome to "news4 today" for this friday, february 8, 2013. while you were sleeping, a powerful winter storm creeped closer to the east coast. this should give you some indication of what this storm will bring. it dumped more than a half a foot of snow in southern wisconsin leading to dozens of accidents. >> things will be worst in the northeast. road crews scrambling to treat roads before the blizzard arrives. i'm not exaggerating. boston could be buried beneath 2 feet of snow by the time it's over. meteorologist tom kierein here with more on that. >>eer getting rain in most of the rei don't know. that live picture we showed you was in leesburg, in loudoun county where the schools are delayed two hours this morning. there could be an inch of accumulation on grassy areas only.
